Balloon pulmonary valvotomy (also called balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty) is a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure used to open a narrowed pulmonary valve — the valve that controls blood flow from the right side of the heart to the lungs. It is most commonly performed in infants, children, and adolescents with moderate to severe pulmonary valve stenosis, a congenital heart condition that accounts for roughly 8 to 10 percent of all congenital heart defects. During the procedure, a cardiologist inserts a thin, flexible catheter through a small puncture in the groin vein, guides it into the heart using live X-ray imaging, and inflates a small balloon across the narrowed valve to separate the fused leaflets and improve blood flow. Because the chest is never opened, children typically recover within days and can return to school within about a week. For most children, the procedure provides durable relief from right-heart strain and allows them to lead fully active, normal lives.
