VSD device closure — also called transcatheter or percutaneous VSD closure — is a minimally invasive procedure that seals a hole between the heart's two lower pumping chambers (ventricles) without opening the chest. A specially designed wire-mesh device is delivered through a thin catheter inserted into a blood vessel in the groin or neck, guided by live X-ray and echocardiography, and expanded across the defect so that tissue gradually grows over it to form a permanent seal. The procedure is performed in a cardiac catheterisation laboratory under general anaesthesia and is suitable for selected muscular or perimembranous VSDs with appropriate anatomy; defects near the valves or in very small infants are usually managed with open-heart surgery instead. Most children are discharged within a few days, and recovery is generally faster and gentler than after surgical repair.
