Cost of Developmental Dysplasia of Hip Treatment in India

Treatment overview

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of conditions in which the ball-and-socket hip joint does not form or fit together correctly — ranging from a mildly shallow socket to a fully dislocated hip. It is more common in girls, first-born babies, and those who were in a breech position in the womb. Treatment is strongly age-dependent: infants diagnosed in the first few months of life are typically treated with a soft Pavlik harness, older babies may need a procedure under anaesthesia to reposition the hip followed by a body cast, and children over 18 months often require open surgery, sometimes combined with bone-reshaping procedures called osteotomies. When started early, outcomes are excellent — the great majority of children go on to walk, run, and play normally — making timely diagnosis and long-term follow-up through childhood the cornerstone of DDH care.

4 approaches available for this treatment / procedure:

Pavlik Harness / Abduction Brace

A soft cloth harness or rigid brace that holds the baby's hips in a flexed, spread position so the ball settles into the socket as the joint grows — suitable for infants under approximately six months.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$100 – $200

Typical tests: Hip ultrasound (Graf classification), Pelvis X-ray (if age-appropriate, typically 4+ months), Physical examination under guidance (Ortolani and Barlow tests), Weight and growth chart assessment. Done in India before admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $500 – $1,500

Treatment Duration

Treatment duration in India: ~2 weeks (~4 hospital visit days across the full span)

Treatment Plan Initial consultation, hip ultrasound, and harness fitting on day 1. Follow-up ultrasound and strap adjustment at approximately 1 week and 2 weeks to confirm hip position and tolerability. Parents are taught daily harness care; the child continues wear at home.

Usually Included in Treatment Package

  • Paediatric orthopaedic surgeon consultation and clinical assessment
  • Pre-procedure diagnostic imaging and blood tests
  • Hip ultrasound assessments during harness treatment
  • Pavlik harness or abduction brace supply and fitting
  • Parent instruction session on harness care and skin checks
  • Initial follow-up consultation before discharge

Closed Reduction and Hip Spica Cast

A procedure under general anaesthesia in which the surgeon manipulates the hip back into the socket without a large incision, then applies a full-body hip cast to hold it in place for several weeks — used in babies roughly 6 to 18 months old.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests: Pelvis and hip X-ray (AP and frog-leg lateral), Hip ultrasound (if under 6 months or as supplement to X-ray), Complete blood count (CBC), Blood group and type, Serum electrolytes, kidney and liver function, Paediatric anaesthesia fitness evaluation, Chest X-ray (pre-anaesthesia), ECG (if clinically indicated). Done in India before admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $3,000 – $6,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~1 days

Hospitalisation: ~6 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~14 days recommended

Total stay: approx 21 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • Paediatric orthopaedic surgeon consultation and clinical assessment
  • Pre-procedure diagnostic imaging and blood tests
  • Closed reduction procedure under general anaesthesia with hip arthrogram
  • Hip spica cast application and initial cast management
  • Paediatric anaesthesia
  • Nursing care and ward monitoring during hospital stay
  • Post-procedure medications and consumables during admission
  • Parent training in spica cast care (nappy care, skin checks, positioning)
  • Initial follow-up consultation before discharge

Open Reduction (with or without Femoral Osteotomy)

An open surgical procedure to directly reposition the hip ball into the socket, sometimes combined with reshaping the upper thigh bone — used when closed reduction has failed or the child is too old for a closed approach, typically from around 18 months.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests: Pelvis and hip X-ray (AP and lateral views), MRI of hip (to assess soft tissue and joint anatomy pre-operatively), Complete blood count (CBC), Blood group and cross-match, Serum electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests, Coagulation profile (PT/INR, aPTT), Paediatric anaesthesia fitness evaluation, Chest X-ray (pre-anaesthesia), ECG (if clinically indicated). Done in India before admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $5,000 – $9,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~2 days

Hospitalisation: ~8 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~21 days recommended

Total stay: approx 31 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • Paediatric orthopaedic surgeon consultation and clinical assessment
  • Pre-procedure diagnostic imaging and blood tests
  • Open reduction surgery under general anaesthesia
  • Hip spica cast application post-surgery
  • Standard-grade fixation hardware (plates and screws) if femoral osteotomy performed
  • Paediatric anaesthesia
  • Nursing care and ward monitoring during hospital stay
  • Post-procedure medications and consumables during admission
  • Initial follow-up consultation before discharge

Pelvic Osteotomy (with or without Open Reduction)

Surgery to cut and reshape the pelvis so the socket better covers the hip ball — used in older children with residual shallow socket or failed earlier treatment, sometimes combined with open reduction in the same operation.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$500 – $1,000

Typical tests: Pelvis and hip X-ray (AP and lateral, including Lauenstein view), CT scan of pelvis and hips (3D reconstruction for surgical planning), MRI of hip (soft tissue and cartilage assessment if indicated), Complete blood count (CBC), Blood group and cross-match, Serum electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests, Coagulation profile (PT/INR, aPTT), Paediatric anaesthesia fitness evaluation, Chest X-ray (pre-anaesthesia), ECG. Done in India before admission.

We came from Germany for treatment at BLK-Max Hospital, and our experience has been excellent from start to finish. A special thanks to Emad Hussain for his outstanding support, coordination, and care throughout our entire journey. He was always available, professional, and made everything smooth and stress-free. We would also like to thank Anushka for her kind support and excellent assistance. We truly appreciate everything the team has done for us. We highly recommend their services to anyone planning to come to India for medical treatment. They are trustworthy, reliable, and genuinely care about their patients. Thank you so much for everything!

Overall, I am very satisfied with the care and support we received. I especially want to give these 5 stars to our coordinator, Natasha, who was assigned to us during our stay, as well as to the entire backend team: Mr. Abdul Alim, Riashree, Faizan, Moshin, and everyone else. Their professionalism and dedication were evident. Thank you, and until next time!
