Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao is a legendary figure in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery in India, with over 30,000 surgeries performed across a career spanning more than 25 years. One of the very few Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons of his caliber in the country, he began his clinical career in 1990 before transitioning into healthcare entrepreneurship in 2000, driven by a mission to make world-class medical facilities accessible to as many people as possible. Dr. Rao founded Mahavir Cardio Vascular Centre in Hyderabad — a 50-bed facility offering heart surgeries at an unimaginably low cost of just Rs. 45,000 — ensuring no patient was turned away for lack of funds. He went on to establish Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), which has grown into a 1,000-bed, NABL- and NABH-accredited institution and is today South India's largest healthcare facility under one roof. His entrepreneurial vision also extended internationally, with the establishment of Afghanistan's first state-of-the-art diagnostic centre in Kabul. He was instrumental in formulating the Rajiv Gandhi Aarogyasri Scheme, a pioneering public-private partnership health insurance initiative launched in Andhra Pradesh in 2007, providing state-of-the-art treatment for people below the poverty line. Dr. Rao was recently honored with the Times Healthcare Achievers Award 2017 as the Lifetime Achiever of the Year in Cardiology & Cardiothoracic Surgery.
