Treatment overview

Donor egg IVF is an assisted reproductive treatment in which eggs from a screened, anonymous donor are fertilised in the laboratory with sperm from the intended father or a donor, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus of the woman who will carry the pregnancy. It is recommended when a woman's own eggs are unlikely to produce a viable pregnancy — due to diminished ovarian reserve, premature ovarian insufficiency, advanced reproductive age, repeated IVF failures, or prior cancer treatment. Because egg quality is primarily determined by the donor's age rather than the recipient's, donor egg IVF generally offers higher success rates per transfer than own-egg IVF for women in their late 30s and 40s. The entire process is outpatient-based: the recipient takes hormonal medications to prepare her uterine lining, attends the clinic for monitoring scans and the embryo transfer procedure, and waits approximately two weeks before a blood test confirms whether the pregnancy has established.
