Treatment overview

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is a laboratory procedure performed on embryos created through IVF, before any embryo is placed in the uterus. It analyses the genetic makeup of each embryo — checking for chromosomal number abnormalities (PGT-A), specific inherited single-gene conditions (PGT-M), or structural chromosome rearrangements (PGT-SR) — so that the fertility team and the couple can make a more informed decision about which embryo to transfer. A small number of cells are removed from the outer layer of each embryo at the blastocyst stage, the embryos are then frozen, and the biopsy samples are sent to a genetics laboratory for analysis using next-generation sequencing. PGT is always performed as part of an IVF cycle; it does not replace standard prenatal screening during pregnancy, and it cannot guarantee a healthy pregnancy, but in the right clinical situation it can meaningfully reduce the risk of transferring an affected embryo.
