Why patients from Botswana travel abroad for treatment

Botswana has made steady investments in its public health infrastructure, yet certain advanced medical procedures — complex cardiac surgery, organ transplants, specialised cancer therapies and a range of high-dependency interventions — remain limited in availability within the country. For patients facing these diagnoses, the choice is not simply about preference; it is about access to treatment that may not yet be routinely offered at home. India has emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations for such patients, combining internationally accredited hospitals, highly trained specialists and a breadth of tertiary-care services that covers almost every branch of medicine.

Beyond availability, the overall cost of treatment in India — even after accounting for flights and accommodation — is often considerably lower than comparable care in South Africa, Europe or the United States. Shorter waiting periods for elective and semi-urgent procedures add further practical appeal. For patients from Botswana navigating a serious or complex diagnosis, India represents a realistic, well-trodden path to timely, quality care.

India & Botswana: a friendship that extends to healthcare

India and Botswana have built a warm, multi-decade partnership with healthcare at its heart. During President Droupadi Murmu's first-ever state visit to Gaborone in November 2025, the two governments signed an MoU on health and pharmaceuticals to facilitate access to quality, affordable Indian medicines, and India announced its decision to supply antiretroviral (ARV) medicines to help address Botswana's HIV/AIDS burden. Separately, when floods struck Gaborone, India extended relief aid worth USD 50,000 consisting of medicines and essential supplies. Botswana also became the 18th country to recognise the Indian Pharmacopoeia, deepening regulatory ties between the two pharmaceutical communities.

People-to-people links reinforce this medical goodwill. An Indian-origin diaspora of approximately 10,000 nationals and PIOs is embedded in Botswana's healthcare, finance and education sectors. On the education side, 54 Batswana students were selected for ICCR scholarships in 2024–25 from over 500 applicants, and in the past decade more than 1,500 students and professionals have trained in India under ICCR, ITEC and related programmes. This long-standing familiarity with Indian institutions, combined with formal government-to-government health agreements, means that for a Botswana patient seeking advanced care abroad, India is neither a distant nor an unfamiliar destination.

Planning your travel

Medical visa from Botswana to India

Visa requirements for Botswanan travellers are set by the Government of India and change from time to time. Rather than publish a procedure that may be out of date, we point you to the official source and confirm your position with you personally.

Check the official Indian government portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in — it is the only authorised site, and no third party can issue an Indian visa on your behalf.

Tell us you are travelling from Botswana and we will confirm what applies to you, what documents you need and what it costs — usually the same day you ask. Whichever route applies, we arrange the hospital invitation letter free of charge and guide you through the paperwork.

What to bring

  • Medical reports & scans — all recent reports, imaging (on disc or drive), prescriptions and discharge summaries, ideally also as digital copies;
  • Passport & photos — valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, plus a few passport-size photographs;
  • Current medicines — in original packaging, with the prescriptions that cover them;
  • A letter from your local doctor — diagnosis and treatment history, if available;
  • Payment — an internationally enabled card and/or US dollars; hospitals accept both, and our team advises on the best way to pay;
  • Comfortable clothing — loose, layered clothes for hospital stays and recovery;
  • Travel documents & hospital papers — your passport, any visa or entry documents that apply to your nationality, and the hospital invitation letter;
  • Your companion's documents — passport, photographs and their own travel documents.

Getting to India from Botswana

There are no direct flights between Botswana and India, so patients typically connect through a regional or Gulf hub. Travellers departing from Gaborone or Francistown most commonly route through Johannesburg, with onward connections via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Addis Ababa to major Indian arrival cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru. Most connecting itineraries from Gaborone to major Indian gateway cities take approximately 13 to 16 hours in total, including the layover at an intermediate hub, depending on the airline, routing and connection time chosen.. Ginger Healthcare coordinates airport reception at the Indian end — a team member meets patients on arrival, assists with transfer to the hospital or initial accommodation, and remains a point of contact throughout the stay.

Understanding the money

Planning the cost of treatment in India

Planning a medical journey abroad involves more than the treatment bill. Understanding every layer of expenditure from the outset allows patients and their families to prepare with confidence rather than encounter unwelcome surprises far from home.

  • Treatment cost — varies according to the specific diagnosis, the chosen hospital and the treating specialist's fees; this is usually the largest single element.
  • Visa fees: Whatever visa applies to your nationality carries a government fee, plus a small bank processing charge. We confirm the current route and fee with you before you apply — see the visa section below.

Pulling all of these elements into a single, coherent estimate before departure makes an enormous practical difference. That is precisely why Ginger Healthcare built the first-of-its-kind Medical Tourism Cost Calculator — a tool that generates a tentative estimate of the complete cost, covering treatment, visa, travel fare and stay in one place. Dedicated counsellors are available around the clock to walk through the figures and answer any questions that arise.

ProcedureIndicative cost (USD)
Brain Tumor Surgery$4,000 - $11,000
Chemotherapy for Cancer$500 - $2,000
Coronary Angioplasty & Stenting$4,500 - $7,000
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)$3,500 - $7,000
Heart Valve Replacement Surgery$5,000 - $9,000
Hip Replacement$5,500 - $9,500
Knee Replacement Surgery$5,000 - $14,000

Indicative ranges for international patients — each procedure links to its detailed page. The final estimate depends on your medical reports, the hospital and the doctor.
