Medical Treatment in India for Cameroonian Patients

English is widely spoken in clinical settings, which eases communication considerably. And with direct or well-connected flights from major Cameroonian cities, the journey, while significant, is entirely manageable. India and Cameroon have maintained warm, cordial relations since Cameroon's independence in 1960, with India opening a resident High Commission in Yaoundé in 2019. Cooperation extends firmly into health and humanitarian aid: in 2025, India donated 1,000 MT of rice, medicines and other relief articles following devastating floods in Cameroon's Far North region. On the pharmaceutical side, the Indian company Africure Pharmaceuticals has invested USD 28 million in Douala to manufacture essential medicines for local consumption, while other Indian pharma names — Sun Pharma, Ajanta Pharma and others — maintain representative offices in Cameroon. Cameroon's Minister of Public Health has also engaged directly with India at ministerial health-cooperation sessions hosted by the Government of India.

India annually allocates over 180 fully funded ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation) slots to Cameroonian professionals for training in India across sectors including healthcare and pharmaceuticals, plus three scholarships under the ICCR Africa Scholarship Scheme. The High Commission of India in Yaoundé notes that medical tourism to India is growing steadily among Cameroonians, and that many students from Cameroon are choosing India for higher studies — meaning that for a Cameroonian patient, India is far from an unfamiliar destination: it is an increasingly well-trodden path, supported by a dedicated medical-visa facility at the Indian High Commission in Yaoundé.

Total travel time from Douala or Yaoundé to Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai is typically around 13 to 20 hours or more, depending on the hub chosen and the layover duration — with the fastest one-stop itineraries (for example, via Nairobi to Delhi) taking approximately 13 to 14 hours of scheduled flight time, and longer connections adding several additional hours.
