Medical Treatment in India for Eritrean Patients

Access to certain specialist medical services in Eritrea is limited, particularly for conditions requiring advanced intervention. Complex cardiac procedures, cancer diagnosis and treatment, organ transplants, and specialist orthopaedic surgeries are among the areas where availability within the country is constrained. For many patients, travelling abroad is not a preference but a practical necessity — the procedures they need simply are not available locally, or capacity means access is uncertain.

India has become a leading destination for patients seeking such care, and the reasons are straightforward. Indian hospitals offer a broad range of advanced treatments across virtually every specialty, supported by internationally trained doctors and modern infrastructure. Treatment costs are considerably more affordable than in Europe, the Gulf, or North America, without any compromise on clinical standards. English is widely used in medical settings, easing communication for patients and families. For Eritrean patients who need to travel for treatment, India combines medical depth, accessibility, and value in a way that is difficult to match elsewhere.

India and Eritrea share a friendship rooted in South-South cooperation, with healthcare woven into its fabric. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India's INS Airavat arrived at Port Massawa in November 2020 under Mission Sagar-II, delivering 50 metric tonnes of food aid — wheat flour, rice and sugar — to help Eritrea weather the crisis. Bilateral cooperation explicitly spans health and pharmaceuticals, as reaffirmed at the May 2024 Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi. India also connected Eritrea's Orotta National Referral Hospital in Asmara to its Pan-African e-Network for tele-medicine and specialist lectures, and extended a US$20 million Line of Credit to Asmara in 2009 for development needs including health infrastructure.

People-to-people ties deepen the bond further. For financial year 2025-26, India has allotted 60 fully-funded ITEC training slots to Eritrea — up from earlier years — and more than 240 Eritrean nationals have already benefited from these courses since 2007-08, spanning fields that include health and agriculture. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations allotted 12 scholarships to Eritrea for academic year 2025-26. A resident Indian community of around 200 professionals works in Eritrea today. Crucially, as the Embassy of India in Asmara notes, India is already an established destination for Eritreans seeking higher studies and medical treatment abroad — making Indian hospitals a familiar, trusted choice for Eritrean patients.

Most patients travelling from Eritrea begin their journey from Asmara, the country's main international gateway. Direct connections to India are not available from Asmara, so travel typically involves one stop — commonly through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, or Doha — before onward flights to major Indian medical hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, or Hyderabad. There is no direct flight from Asmara to India; all routes require at least one connection through a Middle Eastern or other hub. The most frequently served and reliable connection is via Dubai (flydubai operates daily non-stop flights from Asmara to Dubai, with an average flight time of approximately 3 hours 40 minutes, from where numerous onward services reach Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad). Abu Dhabi (Etihad Airways, seasonal November–April) and Jeddah (Flynas, seasonal) are additional options, as is a connection via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, year-round). Factoring in typical layover times, total journey time from Asmara to a major Indian medical hub generally ranges from around 10 to 18 hours depending on the chosen hub, onward flight, and layover duration.
