Medical Treatment in India for Swazi Patients

Eswatini has made steady progress in expanding its health services, yet access to certain advanced procedures — complex cardiac surgery, organ transplants, comprehensive cancer care and a range of specialist interventions — remains limited by the availability of specialist facilities and the capacity to perform high-volume tertiary work. For conditions that require highly specialised expertise or equipment not routinely available within the country, patients and their families often look beyond its borders for timely, appropriate care.

India has become a well-established destination for medical travellers from sub-Saharan Africa, and for good reason. Accredited hospitals across major cities offer a broad range of advanced treatments, from minimally invasive surgery and robotic procedures to multi-disciplinary cancer programmes and transplant services. Treatment costs are substantially lower than in Western countries, English is widely used in clinical and administrative settings, and direct and connecting flight routes make the journey manageable. India and Eswatini formalised their health partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Health & Medicine signed in April 2018. When COVID-19 struck, India acted swiftly: on 26 June 2020 it donated medicines worth Rs. 10 million, and on 11 March 2021 it gifted 20,000 doses of Covishield/Covaxin — making India the first country to donate vaccines to Eswatini under the Vaccine Maitri programme, at a time when much of the developed world was hoarding supplies. India has also granted medicines and medical equipment worth US$ 3 million to the Kingdom.

People-to-people ties reinforce this bond: India's ITEC programme allocates 70 annual training slots (civilian and defence) to Eswatini, with more than 400 Emaswati officials having benefited since India opened its resident High Commission in Mbabane in 2019. The ICCR Africa Scholarship Scheme offers 40 academic places per year for Eswatini students at Indian universities from 2026–27, and a ~3,000-strong Indian community calls Eswatini home.
