Medical Treatment in India for Ethiopian Patients

Ethiopia has made notable strides in expanding its health infrastructure, yet access to certain advanced medical procedures remains limited in availability. Complex cardiac surgeries, specialised cancer treatments — including radiation therapy and advanced oncology — organ transplants, and a range of tertiary-care interventions are not yet widely available across the country. For patients facing such diagnoses, travelling abroad to receive timely, specialist care becomes not a preference but a practical necessity.

India has become a natural destination for many Ethiopian patients making that journey. Its hospitals offer a broad spectrum of advanced procedures, experienced specialists, and internationally recognised standards of care — all at costs that compare favourably with destinations in Europe or the Gulf. The relatively short travel distance from Addis Ababa, the presence of established Ethiopian patient communities in Indian hospital cities, and the availability of facilitators who can coordinate every step from diagnosis to discharge make India a well-suited choice for patients and their families seeking care abroad.

India and Ethiopia share ties stretching back over two millennia, and that friendship has extended firmly into healthcare. Under India's Vaccine Maitri initiative — launched in January 2021 — Ethiopia received 4.2 million doses of Made-in-India COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX scheme. India also gifted Ethiopia medicines worth USD 2 million (November 2019) and donated a 64-Slice CT Scan Machine to the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa. During PM Modi's landmark December 2025 visit — which elevated ties to a Strategic Partnership — India committed to supporting capacity augmentation at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Addis Ababa, with a specific focus on strengthening maternal and neonatal healthcare. Indian companies are now preparing to invest in specialist hospitals and ophthalmology centres in Ethiopia.

People-to-people ties run deep. An Indian diaspora of approximately 2,500 lives and works in Ethiopia, and India's ITEC programme — active in Ethiopia since 1969 — had reached 400 training slots per year by 2022–23, making Ethiopia one of its largest African beneficiaries. ICCR currently offers 55 scholarship slots annually for Ethiopian students to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD studies in India, with that number set to double following the 2025 agreements. For Ethiopian patients, India is therefore far from unfamiliar territory: years of scholarships, medical exchanges and a resident Indian community mean patients travel within a well-established, trusted corridor — not into the unknown.

Ethiopian Airlines operates non-stop flights from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) to all four major Indian medical hubs — Delhi (approximately 6 hours 30 minutes), Mumbai (approximately 6 to 7 hours), Chennai (approximately 6 hours 30 to 40 minutes), and Bengaluru (approximately 6 hours 35 minutes) — and is currently the only carrier offering non-stop service on these routes. Passengers who prefer or require a connection will find one-stop options via Gulf hubs such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat, and Jeddah operated by Emirates, Etihad Airways, Oman Air, Saudia, Qatar Airways, and Air India, typically adding two to four hours to the total journey time. Common arrival points in India are Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru, each of which has hospitals accustomed to receiving international patients.
