Medical Treatment in India for Malagasy Patients

Madagascar has made meaningful strides in expanding its healthcare infrastructure in recent years, yet access to certain advanced medical procedures remains limited. Complex interventions such as open-heart surgery, multi-modality cancer care, and organ transplantation are not widely available, and patients requiring these treatments often find that specialist capacity and equipment are concentrated in a small number of centres. India has become one of the world's most established destinations for international patients, and its appeal is straightforward: a broad range of highly specialised procedures, internationally trained doctors, accredited hospitals, and treatment costs that are a fraction of what comparable care would cost in Europe, the Middle East, or South Africa. English-speaking medical teams ease communication, and India's well-developed medical-travel ecosystem means patients are supported from the moment they enquire to the moment they fly home. India and Madagascar share a partnership anchored in solidarity. Under Mission Sagar, Indian Naval Ship Kesari delivered COVID-19-related medical relief supplies to Madagascar as part of India's broader Indian Ocean outreach. India has also supplied food and foodgrains to Madagascar between 2018 and 2022 as humanitarian assistance. On the capacity-building front, India allocates more than 100 ITEC slots and approximately 30 ICCR scholarships annually for Malagasy professionals and students to train at premier Indian institutions — covering fields including health, agriculture, and information technology.

Total travel time including connections is approximately 16 to 20 hours in the air and in transit, depending on the connecting hub and layover duration, with door-to-door journey time typically longer once ground transfers at both ends are included.
