Why patients from Myanmar travel abroad for treatment
For many patients in Myanmar, the decision to seek medical treatment abroad comes down to access. Certain advanced procedures — among them complex cardiac surgery, oncology treatments involving the latest systemic therapies, organ transplants, and specialist interventional care — have limited availability within the country, and where they do exist, capacity constraints can make timely access difficult. When a diagnosis requires a procedure that is simply not offered locally, or where the necessary expertise and infrastructure are concentrated abroad, travelling for treatment becomes a practical and sometimes urgent choice.
India has become the most natural destination for patients from Myanmar making that journey. Geographic proximity keeps travel manageable, shared cultural familiarity eases the experience, and — critically — India offers a breadth of tertiary and quaternary medical care that few countries can match at comparable cost. Internationally accredited hospitals, specialist surgeons trained at leading global institutions, and integrated patient-support services make India a well-established choice. Ginger Healthcare works specifically to help patients from Myanmar navigate the process — from understanding treatment options and estimating costs to arranging the visa invitation letter and coordinating arrival logistics.

India is increasingly being trusted for medical care
India & Myanmar: a friendship that extends to healthcare
India's healthcare solidarity with Myanmar is concrete and well-documented. Under the Vaccine Maitri initiative launched on 20 January 2021, India gifted 1.5 million doses of Covishield COVID-19 vaccine to Myanmar as a grant — one of the largest single-country gifts in the programme. In July 2024, India handed over a Bhabhatron II Advanced Telecobalt Cancer Therapy Machine and Digital Radiotherapy Simulator to Yangon General Hospital, with medical-equipment and capacity-building assistance also extended to hospitals in Mandalay, Monywa, Sittwe, and Naypyitaw. When Typhoon Yagi struck in September 2024, Operation Sadbhav delivered 53 tonnes of emergency relief including essential medicines. After the 7.7-magnitude earthquake of March 2025, Operation Brahma deployed a 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital that treated 2,519 patients, performed 55 major and 307 minor surgeries, and conducted 6,888 laboratory investigations.
People ties deepen this medical relationship. Over 2 million persons of Indian origin reside in Myanmar — one of the world's larger diaspora communities — creating generations of familiarity with India's culture, languages, and institutions. Myanmar professionals train in India through the ITEC programme, whose annual slots for Myanmar grew from 240 (2021–22) to 400 (2022–23) across fields ranging from healthcare administration to IT. Myanmar students hold ICCR university scholarships and IIT PhD fellowships under the ASEAN fellowship scheme. This interwoven human fabric means that for a patient from Myanmar, India is not an unfamiliar destination: the country, its hospitals, and often its languages are already known territory.

Medical visa from Myanmar to India
Visa requirements for Myanmar (Burmese) travellers are set by the Government of India and change from time to time. Rather than publish a procedure that may be out of date, we point you to the official source and confirm your position with you personally.
Check the official Indian government portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in — it is the only authorised site, and no third party can issue an Indian visa on your behalf.
Tell us you are travelling from Myanmar and we will confirm what applies to you, what documents you need and what it costs — usually the same day you ask. Whichever route applies, we arrange the hospital invitation letter free of charge and guide you through the paperwork.

- Medical reports & scans — all recent reports, imaging (on disc or drive), prescriptions and discharge summaries, ideally also as digital copies;
- Passport & photos — valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, plus a few passport-size photographs;

Getting to India from Myanmar
Patients travel to India from across Myanmar — from Yangon in the south, Mandalay in the centre, and Naypyidaw in between — with Yangon's international airport serving as the main hub for connecting flights. Direct and one-stop services link Myanmar to major Indian gateway cities including Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore, keeping journey times reasonable. From Yangon, Air India and Myanmar Airways International (MAI) operate non-stop flights to Delhi (approximately 3 hours 40–50 minutes); MAI also flies non-stop to Kolkata (approximately 1 hour 50 minutes). Chennai and Bangalore are served via one-stop connections, typically routing through Kolkata or Bangkok, with total journey times of roughly 5–8 hours depending on layover. No direct flights currently operate from Mandalay (MDL) to Indian cities; passengers travelling from Mandalay connect via Yangon or Bangkok, adding approximately 3–5 hours to total travel time, making the full Mandalay-to-Delhi journey around 9 hours or more. Schedules and frequencies are subject to change, so patients should verify current timetables with their airline before travelling.. Upon arrival at the Indian airport, Ginger Healthcare's ground team is available to assist with reception, transfer to the hospital or accommodation, and any immediate logistical needs — so that the transition from travel to treatment is as smooth as possible.

Planning the cost of treatment in India
Planning a medical journey to India involves more than the treatment itself. Patients who account for every layer of expenditure early are far better placed to make confident decisions — and to avoid financial stress at a moment when their energy belongs elsewhere.
- Treatment cost: Varies according to the diagnosis, the specific procedure, the hospital, and the treating doctor's fee structure.
- Visa fees: Whatever visa applies to your nationality carries a government fee, plus a small bank processing charge. We confirm the current route and fee with you before you apply — see the visa section below.
A realistic picture of the complete outlay — treatment, visa, airfare and stay combined — allows patients to plan finances carefully before leaving home. That is precisely why Ginger Healthcare built the Medical Tourism Cost Calculator, a first-of-its-kind tool that brings all these components together into a single tentative estimate. Dedicated counsellors are available around the clock to walk through any questions the estimate raises.
