Understanding your options

Why patients from Togo travel abroad for treatment

Togo, like many countries in West Africa, faces constraints in the availability of certain advanced medical procedures. Complex cardiac surgery, organ transplants, advanced cancer care — including radiotherapy and chemotherapy protocols — and specialised orthopaedic interventions are either unavailable or available only in limited volumes within the country. For patients whose conditions require these treatments, travelling abroad is not a preference but a medical necessity. The driver here is access, not queue times: it is about reaching care that simply does not exist locally at the required level of specialisation or technology.

India has become a trusted destination for patients from across West Africa, and for good reason. Its hospitals offer a broad range of advanced specialities under one roof, with internationally trained specialists using up-to-date equipment. Treatment costs in India are considerably more affordable than equivalent care in Europe or the Gulf — a meaningful factor for patients self-funding their journey. English is widely spoken in Indian hospitals, communication tends to be clear, and the country has long experience welcoming international patients, with dedicated support structures to ease the practical challenges of seeking care far from home.

India & Togo: a friendship that extends to healthcare

India and Togo have maintained cordial bilateral relations since India recognised the Togolese Republic at independence in 1960. Diplomatic engagement has grown steadily: Togo opened its Embassy in New Delhi in 2010, and in June 2024 the two countries held their first-ever round of Foreign Office Consultations in Lomé, agreeing to deepen cooperation across sectors. A concrete health milestone came in 2018, when Togo's Minister of Health and Social Protection attended the Fourth India-Africa Health Forum in Mumbai — a forum that maps health partnerships between India and African nations. Togolese professionals are also eligible for India's fully government-funded ITEC (Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation) programme, under which all costs — including health cover and return airfare — are borne by India.

On vaccines, Togo's COVID-19 campaign launched on 10 March 2021 with Covishield doses produced by the Serum Institute of India in Pune — delivered via the COVAX facility of which India was a primary supplier. These institutional and health-sector connections mean India is far from an unknown quantity for Togolese patients: a country whose medical institutions Togo's own health leadership has engaged directly, and whose pharmaceutical industry has already played a role in protecting Togolese lives.

Planning your travel

Medical visa from Togo to India

Visa requirements for Togolese travellers are set by the Government of India and change from time to time. Rather than publish a procedure that may be out of date, we point you to the official source and confirm your position with you personally.

Check the official Indian government portal: indianvisaonline.gov.in — it is the only authorised site, and no third party can issue an Indian visa on your behalf.

Tell us you are travelling from Togo and we will confirm what applies to you, what documents you need and what it costs — usually the same day you ask. Whichever route applies, we arrange the hospital invitation letter free of charge and guide you through the paperwork.

What to bring

  • Medical reports & scans — all recent reports, imaging (on disc or drive), prescriptions and discharge summaries, ideally also as digital copies;
  • Passport & photos — valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, plus a few passport-size photographs;
  • Current medicines — in original packaging, with the prescriptions that cover them;
  • A letter from your local doctor — diagnosis and treatment history, if available;
  • Payment — an internationally enabled card and/or US dollars; hospitals accept both, and our team advises on the best way to pay;
  • Comfortable clothing — loose, layered clothes for hospital stays and recovery;
  • Travel documents & hospital papers — your passport, any visa or entry documents that apply to your nationality, and the hospital invitation letter;
  • Your companion's documents — passport, photographs and their own travel documents.

Getting to India from Togo

Travellers from Togo typically depart from Lomé's Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport, while those based further north may position through Lomé from Sokodé before their onward journey. Direct flights to India are not available from Togo; the most common routings connect through hubs in West Africa, North Africa, the Middle East, or Europe — with one stop generally sufficient. The most commonly used connecting hub and airline for Lomé to India routes is Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD) via Ethiopian Airlines. Common arrival cities in India include Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad, all of which serve as major medical hubs. Return economy airfares from this region typically fall in the range of $350–$550. Ginger Healthcare arranges airport reception, hospital transfers, and on-ground coordination from the moment patients land, so no one navigates arrival alone.

Understanding the money

Planning the cost of treatment in India

Planning a medical journey to India involves more than the treatment itself. Understanding the full picture of costs — before you travel — helps families budget realistically and avoid financial stress at a time when their focus should be entirely on recovery.

  • Treatment cost: Varies depending on the diagnosis, the procedure required, the hospital chosen, and the experience of the treating specialist.
  • Visa fees: Whatever visa applies to your nationality carries a government fee, plus a small bank processing charge. We confirm the current route and fee with you before you apply — see the visa section below.

Bringing all of these together into a single, realistic figure before departure is exactly what the Medical Tourism Cost Calculator is designed to do — providing a tentative estimate of the complete cost, covering treatment, visa, airfare, and stay in one place. Dedicated counsellors are available around the clock to walk through the estimate and answer any questions that arise.

ProcedureIndicative cost (USD)
Brain Tumor Surgery$4,000 - $11,000
Chemotherapy for Cancer$500 - $2,000
Coronary Angioplasty & Stenting$4,500 - $7,000

Heart Valve Replacement Surgery$5,000 - $9,000
Hip Replacement$5,500 - $9,500
