Medical Treatment in India for Ugandan Patients

Uganda has made meaningful strides in healthcare over recent decades, yet access to certain advanced procedures remains limited outside major urban centres. Highly specialised treatments — among them complex cardiac surgery, organ transplants, advanced cancer therapies, and intricate neurosurgical interventions — are either unavailable or available only at a small number of facilities with long lead times for appointments. For patients facing a serious diagnosis, that wait can feel impossible to accept.

India has become a well-established destination for East African patients seeking this level of care. Its hospitals offer a broad range of advanced specialties under one roof, staffed by consultants who are often internationally trained. Treatment costs are considerably lower than in Europe or the Gulf, and the growing familiarity between Indian hospitals and African patients — including staff experienced in working with Ugandan families — means the practical and cultural distance feels shorter than the geography might suggest. For many patients, India represents the most accessible route to the treatment they need.

India and Uganda share a century-old friendship that has always embraced health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India gifted 100,000 Covishield vaccine doses to Uganda in March 2021 under the Vaccine Maitri initiative, and earlier sent 521 cartons of medicines in August 2020. Medical equipment has flowed in both directions: a radiotherapy machine was commissioned at Mulago Hospital in February 2020, and India announced the donation of a Bhabhatron cancer-therapy machine to Uganda Cancer Institute. Under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, India offers Uganda more than 50 training courses every year — including in healthcare — and an Indian diaspora of approximately 35,000 persons keeps the two countries personally intertwined.

That people-to-people bond extends directly to medical travel. An increasing number of Ugandans already seek treatment in India: nearly 1,500 medical-travel visits were recorded over a recent three-year period, and several Indian hospitals have sent delegations to Kampala to meet prospective patients. For a Ugandan patient heading to India, this is not a leap into the unknown — it is a journey along a well-worn path of trust, shared history, and genuine partnership.

The main international gateway for patients travelling from Uganda is Entebbe International Airport (IATA: EBB), which serves Kampala, Entebbe and the wider region, including travellers coming from Gulu and other parts of the country who connect by road or domestic transfer. There are no direct flights between Uganda and India at present . A direct Uganda Airlines service between Entebbe and Mumbai launched in late 2023 and remains operational; however, patients travelling to other Indian medical hubs such as Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru will still require a connecting flight,, so most itineraries involve a single stopover — commonly in Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai or Doha — before arriving at major Indian medical hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru. Total door-to-airport-to-hospital journey time typically ranges from around 9 to 17 hours depending on the destination city and stopover chosen.
