Treatment overview

Intracranial aneurysm coiling, also called endovascular coiling or coil embolisation, is a minimally invasive procedure used to seal a brain aneurysm from within the blood vessel — without opening the skull. A thin catheter is guided through an artery (usually in the groin or wrist) up into the brain artery where the aneurysm sits, and soft platinum coils are released into the aneurysm sac, packing it so that blood can no longer enter. Over time, the body forms a stable clot inside the sac and effectively closes it off from circulation. Coiling is used both as an emergency treatment after a ruptured aneurysm and as a planned elective procedure for unruptured aneurysms that carry a meaningful risk of future rupture. It is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes one to three hours; most elective patients are discharged within two to four days.
