Treatment overview

Mechanical thrombectomy is an emergency, minimally invasive procedure used to treat acute ischaemic stroke caused by a large blood clot blocking a major artery in the brain. A thin catheter is guided through an artery in the groin or wrist, up to the blocked vessel in the brain, where a stent retriever or aspiration catheter physically removes the clot and restores blood flow to brain tissue that is still salvageable. The procedure is performed in a specialised angiography suite, usually under conscious sedation or general anaesthesia, and typically takes between 30 minutes and two hours. It is considered a standard of care for large-vessel occlusion stroke when performed within the appropriate time window — up to 24 hours from last known well in carefully selected patients. Following the procedure, patients are monitored in a stroke intensive care unit and rehabilitation begins as soon as they are stable.
