China has made remarkable strides in healthcare infrastructure, yet for certain highly specialised procedures — complex cardiac surgeries, advanced oncology treatments, organ transplants, and rare neurological interventions — availability remains concentrated in a small number of major centres, and patients may face significant waiting periods before a procedure can be scheduled. For conditions where timing is critical, or where a particular technique or implant is not yet widely available domestically, travelling abroad for treatment becomes a considered, practical choice rather than a last resort.

India has emerged as one of the most sought-after destinations for medical travel from China, and for reasons that go beyond cost. Its hospitals offer internationally accredited care across a wide range of specialties, with highly trained surgeons — many of whom hold postgraduate qualifications from the United Kingdom, the United States, or Australia — working alongside modern diagnostic and surgical technology. Treatment can typically be scheduled within days of a confirmed diagnosis, English-speaking coordinators and Mandarin-friendly support services ease communication, and the overall cost of care is substantially lower than in most Western countries. For patients weighing their options carefully, India offers a combination of clinical quality, accessibility, and value that is difficult to match.

India and China share one of the world's most consequential health-linked economic ties: India relies on China for a significant share of its active pharmaceutical ingredients, while the two neighbours recorded two-way trade of US $128 billion in 2024. People-to-people bonds in medicine run deep in the other direction too — approximately 23,000 Indian students were enrolled in Chinese universities as of 2019, the majority studying medicine, making India one of the largest sources of foreign medical students in China. Diplomatic momentum has accelerated since October 2024, when the two sides agreed on border-patrolling arrangements and Prime Minister Modi met President Xi at the BRICS Summit in Kazan, their first formal bilateral meeting in five years.

Through 2025 both governments have moved to reopen channels: India relaxed visa restrictions on Chinese nationals, the two countries agreed to resume direct flights (suspended since 2020), and access to pilgrimage sites in China was restored for Indian visitors. For a Chinese patient considering medical travel, these developments matter directly — easier visa processing, reinstated air connectivity, and a long-standing academic and pharmaceutical relationship mean India is neither an unfamiliar partner nor a distant destination.

Travellers departing from Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou will find regular services to India's principal medical hubs, including Delhi (Indira Gandhi International Airport) and Mumbai (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport), with Chennai and Hyderabad also served depending on the route. Direct flights between China and India resumed in late 2025 after a five-year suspension, with the network expanding through 2026. As of mid-2026, confirmed direct services include IndiGo operating daily non-stop flights on the Delhi–Guangzhou and Kolkata–Guangzhou routes, China Eastern Airlines running up to five weekly flights between Shanghai Pudong and Delhi (journey time approximately seven hours), Air India flying up to five times a week between Delhi and Shanghai, Air China operating three weekly flights between Beijing and Delhi, and IndiGo running a daily Kolkata–Shanghai service. Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad are not yet served by direct China flights, so patients travelling from those cities will need a connecting service via a hub such as Delhi, Singapore, Bangkok, or Hong Kong; total journey times with a connection typically range from eight to fourteen hours depending on the routing. The number of routes and frequencies is growing, so patients are advised to check current airline schedules when booking.
