Medical Treatment in India for Maldivian Patients

The Maldives offers strong primary and general healthcare across its network of island facilities, yet certain advanced procedures — complex cardiac surgery, organ transplants, neurosurgical interventions, and specialist cancer care including radiation oncology — are not widely available within the country. When a diagnosis demands that level of specialist input, travelling abroad for treatment becomes a practical and necessary choice rather than a preference. Capacity constraints for high-dependency procedures can also mean that a patient requiring urgent or highly specialised care must look beyond the archipelago.

India has become the natural destination for many Maldivian patients making that journey. Geographical proximity, short flight times from Malé, and the absence of a language barrier for English-speaking patients make logistics straightforward. Indian hospitals — particularly in cities such as Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru — offer internationally accredited specialist care across cardiology, oncology, transplantation and many other disciplines, typically at costs that are a fraction of equivalent treatment in Europe, the Gulf, or South-East Asia. The combination of clinical depth, accessibility and affordability has made India the most frequently chosen destination for Maldivians seeking advanced medical care abroad.

India and the Maldives share one of the most enduring healthcare partnerships in South Asia. Under the Vaccine Maitri initiative launched on 20 January 2021, the Maldives was among the very first countries to receive COVID-19 vaccines as a gift from India — 100,000 Covishield doses delivered on day one. In June 2026, India sent a further 20,000 measles vaccine doses and approximately three tonnes of medical supplies to support the Maldives' immunisation drive. India also built and funded the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé — the country's first and largest government healthcare facility, opened in 1995 — and completed a major renovation costing INR 52 crore in 2019. Two sea ambulances were handed over to the Maldives Ministry of Defence under India's High-Impact Community Development Projects scheme. Both governments' July 2025 Joint Vision statement explicitly commits to deepening health cooperation by providing affordable Indian healthcare to Maldivians and strengthening hospital linkages.

People-to-people ties reinforce this medical bond. An estimated 60,000 Indian nationals live and work in the Maldives, with a large number employed as doctors, nurses, paramedics and pharmacists at middle and senior levels across the archipelago. Maldivian students have consistently pursued higher education in India: since 2012–13 more than 170 have received ICCR scholarships for undergraduate through PhD programmes, and over 200 ITEC professional-training slots were utilised in 2023–24 alone — slots that have since been raised to 300 for 2024–25. For a Maldivian patient travelling to India for specialist care, this deep institutional familiarity — shared professionals, long-running academic ties, and a bilateral healthcare commitment formalised at the highest level — means India is anything but an unfamiliar destination.

Maldivian patients depart from Velana International Airport in Malé (IATA: MLE), which has direct or single-connection services to the major Indian cities that host leading medical centres — Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kochi are among the most commonly reached. Kochi is the closest Indian medical hub, with direct non-stop flights from Velana International Airport (MLE) taking approximately 1 hour 30 minutes, operated by IndiGo and Maldivian. Bengaluru is also reachable non-stop in around 2 hours, while Mumbai is served by direct flights in approximately 2 hours 50 minutes. Delhi is reachable non-stop via Air India in about 4 hours 5 minutes. Chennai has no current non-stop service and requires a one-stop connection through Bengaluru, Kochi, or Colombo, bringing total travel time to roughly 5 to 6 hours. Carriers operating these routes include Air India, IndiGo, Maldivian, and SriLankan Airlines. Economy return fares generally fall between $100 and $250.
