Medical Treatment in India for Sri Lankan Patients

Sri Lanka has a well-established public health system and a growing private sector, yet for certain complex or highly specialised procedures — including advanced cardiac surgery, multi-modality cancer care, organ transplants, and some neurosurgical interventions — availability can be limited, and patients may face capacity constraints or lengthy waits for specialist consultations. For conditions where time is a critical factor, or where a procedure simply is not widely performed locally, travelling abroad for treatment becomes a practical and sometimes necessary choice.

India is the natural destination for most Sri Lanka patients making that journey. Geographical proximity keeps travel manageable — Colombo to Chennai or another major Indian city is a short flight — while the breadth of tertiary and quaternary care available in Indian hospitals means that almost any diagnosis can be addressed under one roof. Costs for equivalent procedures are typically a fraction of what patients would pay in Europe, Southeast Asia or the Middle East. Strong cultural and linguistic familiarity, and a large Sri Lankan diaspora across South India in particular, also make the practical side of a medical stay considerably easier to navigate.

India and Sri Lanka share one of South Asia's most layered partnerships — and healthcare sits at its heart. When Sri Lanka faced its gravest economic crisis in 2022, India extended a USD 1 billion credit facility specifically for the purchase of food, medication, and other essentials, later renewed through March 2024. Before that, under the Vaccine Maitri initiative launched in January 2021, India gifted 500,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses to Sri Lanka — among the first tranches delivered to any neighbour. India's overall credit and grant assistance to Sri Lanka now exceeds USD 7.5 billion, with grant assistance alone surpassing USD 850 million, spanning health, housing, infrastructure, and rehabilitation across all 25 districts. In April 2025, Prime Minister Modi's visit produced seven new MoUs, one explicitly covering health and mass media cooperation.

The human ties run equally deep. India offers nearly 1,000 scholarship slots annually to Sri Lankan students, plus 402 fully-funded Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) slots each year — ITEC training that explicitly includes healthcare as a field. Around 1.5 million Indian-Origin Tamils call Sri Lanka home, while a further ~10,000 People of Indian Origin are active in Sri Lankan business. This density of institutional, financial, and family connections means that for a Sri Lankan patient considering treatment abroad, India is not a foreign country in any meaningful sense — it is a trusted neighbour with proven ties, familiar faces, and a long record of showing up when it matters most.

Most patients travelling from Sri Lanka to India depart from Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo (CMB), which offers frequent direct services to several of India's main medical hubs — Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai among them. Patients from Kandy or other central regions typically connect via Colombo, while those from Jaffna are in particularly close proximity to South India and may have additional routing options worth exploring.
