Medical Treatment in India for Syrian Patients

Access to certain advanced medical procedures remains limited across much of Syria, particularly in areas such as complex cardiac surgery, oncology treatments including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, organ transplants, and specialised fertility care. Years of disruption to infrastructure have also affected the availability of high-end diagnostic equipment and specialist consultations in many cities, meaning patients with serious or complex conditions often find it difficult to receive the level of care they need close to home. For many Syrian families, travelling abroad is not a choice made lightly — it is a practical necessity driven by the reality of what is currently available.

India has become a natural destination for patients from Syria seeking this level of care. Its hospitals offer a broad range of internationally accredited specialties, from cardiac surgery and cancer treatment to orthopaedics and reproductive medicine, supported by experienced specialists and modern facilities. Treatment costs are substantially lower than in Europe or the Gulf, and the process of arranging care — from obtaining a hospital invitation letter to navigating the medical visa — is well established. India and Syria share warm diplomatic ties formalised in 1950, and this friendship has consistently extended to healthcare. Between 2018 and 2022, India supplied food, medicines, ambulances, and medical equipment to Syria. Following the devastating February 2023 earthquakes, India launched Operation Dost, airlifting over 23 tonnes of relief to Damascus — including critical-care medicines, anti-cancer drugs, antibiotics, and anti-hypertensives — which were handed to Syria's Ministry of Health on 9 March 2023; the State of Kerala separately donated ₹20 million for earthquake victims. Syria also received 256,800 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (manufactured by the Serum Institute of India) via the COVAX facility in April 2021. India continued its humanitarian support into 2025, sending a further 5-metric-tonne consignment of life-saving medicines to Syria. At the 6th India–Syria Foreign Office Consultations (November 2024), both governments singled out pharmaceuticals and capacity-building as priority areas for deeper cooperation.

People-to-people ties reinforce these institutional links: Syrian university presidents attended the first India–Arab Universities' Presidents' Conference in New Delhi in February 2025, and India's ITEC programme offers fully-funded professional training to Syrian nominees across a wide range of fields. For Syrian patients, these bonds translate into practical reassurance — India is not an unfamiliar destination, but a long-standing partner whose medicines, doctors, and hospitals already have a proven track record of serving Syria's people.

Patients travelling from Syria most commonly depart from Damascus International Airport (DAM), which serves as the main hub connecting Syria with international routes. Those based further north, in cities such as Aleppo or Homs, typically travel to Damascus to board their outbound flight. Direct connections to India are limited, so most itineraries involve a transit through a Gulf hub — most commonly Dubai (via flydubai or Emirates connections), Doha (via Qatar Airways), or Abu Dhabi (via Etihad Airways or Air Arabia Abu Dhabi), with a transit through a Gulf hub, with total journey times approximately 10 to 16 hours in total including the Gulf layover, varying accordingly. The most common arrival cities in India for medical travellers are Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, each of which has well-developed infrastructure for receiving international patients.
