The arterial switch operation (ASO), also called the Jatene procedure, is a major open-heart surgery performed on newborns to correct transposition of the great arteries (TGA) — a serious congenital heart defect in which the aorta and pulmonary artery are connected to the wrong ventricles. Without surgery, TGA is not survivable, as oxygenated and deoxygenated blood circulate in separate loops and cannot reach the body normally. The operation involves detaching both great arteries and reattaching them in their correct positions, while carefully transferring the coronary arteries onto the new aorta. It is usually performed within the first one to three weeks of life, before the left ventricle loses the strength needed to pump blood to the entire body. Performed in specialised paediatric cardiac centres, the surgery has a high success rate in experienced hands, and most children who undergo it go on to live full, active lives with regular cardiac follow-up.
