ASD device closure is a catheter-based procedure used to seal a hole in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart — called an atrial septal defect (ASD). Instead of opening the chest, an interventional cardiologist guides a thin catheter through a vein in the groin up to the heart, where a small mesh occluder device is deployed across the defect. The two flexible discs of the device sandwich the septum, sealing the hole, and the body's own tissue gradually grows over it within months, making it a permanent part of the heart wall. This approach is suitable primarily for secundum-type ASDs with adequate rim tissue and has largely replaced open-heart surgery for eligible patients. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia in children and under sedation or general anaesthesia in adults, with most patients discharged within one to two days and able to return to normal activities within a few weeks.

Typical tests for this treatment: Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), Transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE/TEE) for defect sizing and rim assessment, ECG, Chest X-ray, CBC (complete blood count), Kidney function tests (KFT), Coagulation profile (PT/INR), Pediatric anaesthesia fitness evaluation. Done in India before hospital admission. Cost varies with case complexity.
