ASD surgical closure is an open-heart operation to permanently close a hole in the wall separating the two upper chambers of the heart — the right and left atria. It is performed when the defect is large enough to cause measurable strain on the heart and lungs, and is the standard treatment for primum, sinus venosus, and coronary sinus ASDs, as well as for large secundum defects that are not suitable for catheter-based device closure. The surgeon either stitches a small hole directly shut or sews a patch — made from the patient's own pericardium or a synthetic material — over a larger defect, restoring normal blood flow through the heart. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia using a heart-lung machine and typically takes two to four hours. Most children and adults recover fully within two to three months and go on to lead completely normal, active lives.
