PDA device closure is a catheter-based procedure used to permanently seal a patent ductus arteriosus — a blood vessel that normally closes shortly after birth but sometimes remains open, allowing abnormal blood flow between the aorta and the pulmonary artery. Instead of opening the chest, a pediatric interventional cardiologist threads a thin catheter through a vein in the groin up to the heart and deploys a small implant — either a mesh occluder or a wire coil — that blocks the abnormal vessel. The procedure is performed in a cardiac catheterisation laboratory under general anaesthesia, typically takes 30 to 90 minutes, and avoids both a chest scar and open-heart surgery. For most children with a suitably sized and shaped PDA, device closure has become the standard treatment, with excellent closure success rates and a recovery measured in days rather than weeks.
