Why patients from Iraq travel abroad for treatment
Iraq has made considerable strides in its healthcare infrastructure, yet access to certain advanced medical procedures — particularly complex cardiac surgery, oncology treatment, organ transplants, and specialist interventions for rare or difficult conditions — remains limited outside major urban centres. When a diagnosis calls for a procedure that is not readily available locally, or when specialist capacity means that patients face extended uncertainty before treatment can begin, many Iraqi families begin looking beyond their borders for answers. This is a practical decision, born of necessity, and one that tens of thousands of Iraqi patients have made in recent years. According to India's Bureau of Immigration, 56,310 patients from Iraq travelled to India for medical treatment in 2019 alone.
India has become the destination of choice for a large proportion of these patients — and the reasons are consistent. World-class hospitals in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad offer access to experienced specialists, modern diagnostic technology, and treatment pathways that meet international standards. Costs are a fraction of what comparable care commands in the United States, Europe or the Gulf. English is widely used in medical settings, and India's medical institutions have long experience welcoming and supporting Arabic-speaking patients and their families throughout the treatment journey.

India is increasingly being trusted for medical care
India & Iraq: a friendship that extends to healthcare
India and Iraq share ties that reach well beyond trade and diplomacy into healthcare. A number of Indian hospitals are on the panel of the Iraqi Health Ministry, which formally refers eligible Iraqi patients to them for treatment. In 2024 alone, the two Indian missions in Baghdad and Erbil together issued approximately 35,300 visas — the large majority for medical treatment — underlining the scale of health-related travel. Indian doctors have also travelled the other way: a Government of India–sponsored Jaipur Foot (BMVSS) artificial-limb camp fitted more than 1,000 patients in Baghdad in October–November 2023. Under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, Iraqi health officials joined e-ITEC courses on COVID-19 pandemic management, and a special e-ITEC webinar on basic Covid-19 management conducted by PGI-MER, Chandigarh was attended by Iraqi health officials in April 2020.
People-to-people links reinforce this medical corridor. More than 10,000 Iraqi students have pursued PhD, Master's, and undergraduate degrees in India — the most sought-after disciplines being pharmaceutical and medical sciences. India allocates 200 ITEC slots annually to Iraqi professionals and, for 2024–25, offered 75 ICCR scholarship places for Iraqi students. This depth of connection — shared classrooms, government-to-government health referrals, humanitarian medical camps, and tens of thousands of visa interactions every year — means India is far from an unfamiliar destination for an Iraqi patient: it is a well-travelled, institutionally supported route to quality care.

Medical visa from Iraq to India
Iraqi citizens are not eligible for India's online e-Visa. Iraq does not appear on the official list of e-Visa eligible countries, so you apply for a Medical Visa through the Indian Mission serving your city.
Begin the application form at indianvisaonline.gov.in, then follow the submission instructions published by the Indian Mission — these normally require attending in person with the printed form, the fee and your documents.
You will normally be asked for: a recommendation letter from your doctor in Iraq, an invitation letter from the treating hospital in India (we arrange this free of charge), proof that you can meet the cost of treatment, and a passport valid well beyond your intended stay.
Because this route is slower than an online visa, tell us your timeline early and we will get the hospital letter to you as soon as the doctor has reviewed your reports.
Visa position verified on 28 July 2026 against the official source. Requirements can change — we re-confirm yours before you apply.
What to bring
- Medical reports & scans — all recent reports, imaging (on disc or drive), prescriptions and discharge summaries, ideally also as digital copies;
- Passport & photos — valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, plus a few passport-size photographs;
- Current medicines — in original packaging, with the prescriptions that cover them;
- A letter from your local doctor — diagnosis and treatment history, if available;
- Payment — an internationally enabled card and/or US dollars; hospitals accept both, and our team advises on the best way to pay;
- Comfortable clothing — loose, layered clothes for hospital stays and recovery;
- Visa & hospital papers — the visa in your passport and the hospital invitation letter;
- Your companion's documents — passport, photographs and their own visa.
Getting to India from Iraq
Iraq is served by several international airports, with Baghdad International Airport (BGW) the primary departure point for most patients travelling to India. Travellers from Basra, Erbil and Mosul typically connect through Baghdad, though some direct or one-stop services operate from other regional hubs depending on the season and carrier. Most itineraries involve a single transit — commonly through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Kuwait — before arriving at major Indian medical hubs such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai or Hyderabad. Most itineraries from Baghdad to major Indian medical hubs involve one transit stop and typically take between 7 and 11 hours in total travel time, depending on the connecting city and layover duration. Upon arrival in India, Ginger Healthcare coordinates airport pickup, transfer to the hospital or accommodation, and an interpreter if needed — so that patients and their families can focus entirely on the treatment ahead.

Planning the cost of treatment in India
Planning a medical trip to India involves more than the treatment itself. A clear picture of all the costs involved — before you leave home — makes for a less stressful journey and far better financial preparation.
- Treatment cost: Varies depending on your diagnosis, the procedure recommended, the hospital, and the treating specialist's experience and profile.
- Visa fees: A Medical Visa applied for through the Indian Mission carries a government fee, plus a small bank processing charge. Family members travelling with you pay their own visa fee. We confirm the current amounts with you before you apply.
Pulling all of these elements into a single, realistic figure before departure is exactly what the Medical Tourism Cost Calculator is designed to do. It is a first-of-its-kind tool that generates a tentative estimate of your complete cost — treatment, visa, airfare, and accommodation combined. Dedicated counsellors are available around the clock to walk through the estimate with you and answer any questions that arise.

Frequently asked questions — Iraq
Will there be language support in India?
English is the working language of most major Indian hospitals, and many facilities that regularly treat Iraqi patients also have Arabic-speaking coordinators or interpreters available. Ginger Healthcare provides interpreter support for consultations and can arrange this in advance of your arrival.
Which Indian cities do most Iraqi patients travel to for treatment?
Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad are the principal medical destinations, as these cities are home to hospitals with the widest range of specialist services. The choice of city is usually guided by the specific treatment required, and Ginger Healthcare helps match patients to the most appropriate centre for their condition.
Do I need a visa, and can I apply online?
You need a Medical Visa, and it cannot be obtained through India's online e-Visa system — Iraqi passport holders are not on the e-Visa eligible list. You begin the application form at indianvisaonline.gov.in and then submit it in person to the Indian Mission serving your city, with the fee and supporting documents. This route takes longer than an online visa, so tell us your timeline early.
What documents will the Indian Mission ask for?
Normally: a recommendation letter from your doctor at home, an invitation letter from the treating hospital in India, proof that you can meet the cost of treatment, and a passport valid well beyond your intended stay. We arrange the hospital letter free of charge as soon as the doctor has reviewed your reports, and we confirm the current document list with you — requirements are set by the Mission and do change.
