Treatment overview

CAR-T cell therapy is a form of cancer immunotherapy in which a patient's own T cells are collected from the blood, genetically engineered in a specialised laboratory to recognise and attack cancer cells, grown into large numbers, and then infused back into the patient. It is used primarily for certain relapsed or treatment-resistant blood cancers — including B-cell lymphomas, B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, multiple myeloma, and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia — when standard treatments have not produced a lasting response. The entire process spans several weeks: cells are first collected by a procedure called leukapheresis, sent for manufacturing over two to four weeks, and then the patient receives a short course of conditioning chemotherapy before the engineered cells are infused. After infusion, patients remain under close medical supervision — typically in hospital for one to two weeks and then near the treatment centre — for a total of six to eight weeks, given the distinctive side effects, including cytokine release syndrome and neurological changes, that require prompt management.
