Medical Treatment in India for Turkish Patients

Turkey has a well-developed healthcare sector that handles a broad range of everyday and specialist medical needs. Where patients increasingly look beyond its borders is in accessing certain highly advanced or lower-volume procedures — complex cancer treatments, rare cardiac interventions, organ transplants, and specialised surgeries that may be available only at a small number of centres, with limited capacity and, in some cases, lengthy waiting periods for a confirmed date. For conditions where timing and access to dedicated expertise genuinely matter, travelling abroad becomes a considered and practical choice rather than a last resort.

India has grown into one of the most sought-after destinations for such care — not through marketing alone, but through consistent outcomes in demanding specialties. Internationally accredited hospitals in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru bring together experienced specialists, established protocols for complex procedures, and an infrastructure built around receiving international patients. Treatment costs are substantially lower than in Western Europe or North America, yet the clinical environment is modern and well-equipped. A large English-speaking medical workforce, a mature medical-travel support ecosystem, and direct flight connections from Turkish cities add practical ease to what is already a medically compelling case.

India and Turkey share a friendship tested — and proven — in crisis. When a devastating earthquake struck southern Turkey on 6 February 2023, India launched Operation Dost within hours: Indian Air Force C-17 flights carried NDRF rescue teams, life-saving medicines, patient monitors and ECG machines to Adana, and Indian medical personnel set up and operated a field hospital in İskenderun, returning home only on 20 February 2023. India's total relief material for the earthquake response was valued at approximately ₹7 crore. The Turkish Ambassador at the time quoted a Turkish proverb — "Dost kara günde belli olur" (a friend in need is a friend indeed) — in thanking New Delhi.

People-to-people ties reinforce this bond. Around 2,100 Indian nationals live in Turkey — roughly 1,850 in Istanbul and its environs and about 250 in Ankara — working in commerce, banking, technology and academia. India's fully government-funded ITEC programme extends professional training to Turkish nationals across fields including IT, engineering and healthcare management. As of the YÖK 2025 report, approximately 15,000 Indian students are enrolled in Turkish universities. Istanbul Airport, as a major international hub, offers the widest range of onward routings, with flights operating to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru — cities that between them host the majority of India's internationally accredited hospitals. Passengers from Ankara and Izmir typically connect through Istanbul or another regional hub before the onward leg. Turkish Airlines operates non-stop flights from Istanbul Airport to both Delhi and Mumbai, with each flight taking approximately six hours. Passengers travelling to Chennai or Bengaluru travel via a one-stop connection — most commonly through Istanbul or a Gulf hub such as Dubai or Doha — bringing total journey times to roughly ten to fourteen hours depending on the layover. Passengers departing from Ankara or Izmir first connect to Istanbul before boarding the onward flight to India.
