Treatment overview

Thyroid-nodule thermal ablation is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that uses heat energy — delivered through a fine needle — to shrink a benign or low-risk thyroid nodule from within, while leaving the surrounding healthy thyroid tissue intact. Two main energy types are used: radiofrequency ablation (RFA), which generates heat via an alternating electrical current, and microwave ablation (MWA), which heats tissue by vibrating water molecules with microwave energy. The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance and local anaesthesia, typically takes one to two hours, and does not require an overnight hospital stay in most cases. It is an option for patients with symptomatic, growing, or cosmetically bothersome nodules confirmed as benign on biopsy, who wish to avoid surgery or preserve thyroid function. The nodule shrinks gradually over six to twelve months, and most patients do not require thyroid hormone replacement afterwards.
