Cost of Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant in India

Treatment overview

A pediatric bone marrow transplant, also called a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT), replaces a child's diseased or failing bone marrow with healthy blood-forming stem cells from a donor or from the child's own previously collected cells. It is recommended for children with blood cancers such as leukaemia and lymphoma, bone marrow failure syndromes, inherited blood disorders like thalassemia and sickle cell disease, severe primary immunodeficiencies, and certain metabolic conditions. The process involves a week or so of high-dose conditioning chemotherapy — sometimes combined with radiation — to clear the child's existing marrow, followed by the stem cell infusion itself, which is given through a central line much like a blood transfusion. The child then remains in a protected hospital environment for four to eight weeks while the new stem cells engraft and begin producing healthy blood cells. With modern donor matching and supportive care, most children who undergo a successful transplant return to school and normal childhood life.

4 approaches available for this treatment / procedure:

Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant Own Cells

The child's own stem cells are collected and stored before high-dose chemotherapy, then returned to rebuild the marrow — used mainly for certain solid tumours and lymphomas.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$1,000 – $1,500

Typical tests for this variant: CBC, blood biochemistry, and coagulation profile, Viral markers — CMV, EBV, hepatitis B/C, HIV, Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, 2D Echocardiogram and ECG, Kidney and liver function tests, CT or PET-CT for disease staging, Paediatric anaesthesia clearance. Done in India before hospital admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $20,000 – $25,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~7 days

Hospitalisation: ~28 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~56 days recommended

Total stay: approx 91 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • Stem cell mobilisation and peripheral blood collection (apheresis)
  • Stem cell processing and cryopreservation
  • Conditioning chemotherapy
  • Stem cell re-infusion via central line
  • Infection prevention and supportive care during admission
  • Blood and platelet transfusions as required
  • Paediatric haematology and transplant team fees
  • Post-discharge outpatient follow-up for first 100 days

Allogeneic Transplant — Matched Sibling Donor (MSD) Sibling Match

Stem cells are donated by a fully HLA-matched brother or sister, which typically carries the lowest risk of graft rejection and graft-versus-host disease among allogeneic options.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$1,500 – $2,500

Typical tests for this variant: HLA tissue typing — child and sibling donor, Full crossmatch, Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, CBC, blood biochemistry, and coagulation profile, Viral markers — CMV, EBV, hepatitis B/C, HIV, HSV, VZV, 2D Echocardiogram and ECG, Pulmonary function test (if age-appropriate), Kidney and liver function tests, Dental examination and OPG X-ray, Paediatric anaesthesia clearance and growth assessment. Done in India before hospital admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $25,000 – $35,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~7 days

Hospitalisation: ~35 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~63 days recommended

Total stay: approx 105 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • GVHD prophylaxis and infection prevention during admission
  • Blood and platelet transfusions as required
  • Paediatric haematology and transplant team fees
  • Post-discharge outpatient follow-up for first 100 days

Haploidentical (Half-Matched) Transplant — Parent Donor Haplo

A parent donates their half-matched stem cells, making this option available to almost every child who lacks a fully matched sibling — modern techniques have made outcomes comparable to matched donors.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$1,500 – $2,500

Typical tests for this variant: HLA tissue typing — child and parent donor, Full crossmatch and chimerism baseline, Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, CBC, blood biochemistry, and coagulation profile, Viral markers — CMV, EBV, hepatitis B/C, HIV, HSV, VZV, 2D Echocardiogram and ECG, Pulmonary function test (if age-appropriate), Kidney and liver function tests, Dental examination and OPG X-ray, Paediatric anaesthesia clearance and growth assessment. Done in India before hospital admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

I came from Chad for my nose surgery, and choosing Ginger Health Care was one of the best decisions I made. From the very beginning until the completion of my treatment, the entire team managed everything exceptionally well and exceeded my expectations. Ginger Health Care recommended an excellent doctor for my nose treatment, and my surgery was a great success. I am now feeling very happy and satisfied with the results, and I am about to return to my country with wonderful memories of my experience in India. Before coming to India, I was worried about how everything would be managed, but the Ginger Health Care team took care of every detail, making the entire process smooth, comfortable, and stress-free. Their professionalism, prompt support, and genuine care gave me complete confidence throughout my medical journey. A very special thanks to Dolma Ma'am and Mohsin for their dedication, kindness, and outstanding coordination. I am also sincerely grateful to Dr. Suresh Singh Naruka for his exceptional care and successful treatment. I can honestly say that my experience seeking treatment abroad was nothing short of exceptional, and it really highlighted just how disappointing my experience with the NHS had been in comparison. After facing long delays, lack of clear communication, and a general feeling of being overlooked in the UK system, making the decision to travel overseas for care felt like a last resort—but it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. From the moment we arrived, everything was handled with a level of professionalism and efficiency that immediately put me at ease. The hospital itself was spotless, modern, and incredibly well-organised. There was no sense of chaos or long waiting around; every appointment, test, and consultation was arranged promptly and ran exactly on time. It felt like the entire system was built around patient care and comfort, rather than patients having to fit into an overstretched system. The medical team were outstanding. Every doctor and nurse I interacted with took the time to listen carefully, explain things clearly, and make sure I fully understood my treatment plan. I never once felt rushed or dismissed. Instead, I felt genuinely cared for and respected, which made a huge difference during what was already a stressful time. One of the standout parts of the entire experience was the support we received from Natasha, our international client coordinator. From the very beginning, she went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. She organised appointments, helped with paperwork, arranged transport, and was always available whenever we had questions or concerns. Her communication was excellent, and she made what could have been a very overwhelming experience feel simple and manageable. Natasha didn’t just do her job—she genuinely cared. She checked in on us regularly, made sure we were comfortable, and provided reassurance every step of the way. Having someone like her there made a huge difference, especially being in a foreign country where things can easily feel unfamiliar or stressful. Overall, the level of care, attention, and efficiency we experienced abroad was on a completely different level. It’s frustrating to say, but the contrast with the NHS was stark. Where we had previously faced delays and uncertainty, we instead found clarity, speed, and genuine compassion. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone considering treatment abroad. The quality of care, combined with the incredible support from staff like Natasha, made what could have been a difficult experience into a very positive one. I’m truly grateful for the care I received and wouldn’t hesitate to make the same decision again if needed.
