Cost of Pediatric Sickle Cell Treatment in India

Treatment overview

Pediatric sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder in which abnormal haemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid and crescent-shaped, blocking small blood vessels and breaking down faster than normal. This leads to chronic anaemia, episodes of severe pain, and over time, damage to the brain, lungs, kidneys, and other organs. Care for children has been transformed over the past generation: daily preventive antibiotics, extra vaccinations, the disease-modifying medicine hydroxyurea, carefully managed blood transfusion programmes, and regular specialist monitoring now allow most children to attend school, play, and grow well. For children with severe disease and a suitable donor, a haematopoietic stem cell transplant offers the possibility of a lasting cure. The right treatment pathway depends on the child's disease severity, age, complications, and donor availability, and is decided together with a specialist paediatric haematology team.

3 approaches available for this treatment / procedure:

Comprehensive Medical Management (Hydroxyurea + Preventive Care)

Specialist-guided initiation or optimisation of hydroxyurea, daily preventive antibiotics, and a personalised monitoring plan — the core long-term medical programme for most children with sickle cell disease.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests: Complete blood count (CBC) with differential, Reticulocyte count, Fetal haemoglobin (HbF) level, Liver function tests (LFT), Kidney function tests (KFT) with urine albumin, Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, 2D Echocardiogram (baseline cardiac screening), Ophthalmology screening (slit-lamp and fundus for sickle retinopathy). Done in India before admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $3,000 – $5,000

Treatment Duration

Treatment duration in India: ~2 weeks (~5 hospital visit days across the full span)

Treatment Plan Initial 2–3 OPD visits over the first week for full diagnostic workup, baseline organ function assessment, hydroxyurea dose initiation and titration. A further 1–2 follow-up visits in week 2 to confirm blood count response and tolerability. Child is not admitted unless a complication arises.

Usually Included in Treatment Package

  • Paediatric haematologist consultations (3–4 visits over 2 weeks)
  • Pre-treatment diagnostics — CBC, reticulocyte count, HbF level, organ function panel, TCD if due
  • Hydroxyurea initiation with dose titration and written long-term management plan
  • Preventive antibiotic and folic acid prescription with dosing guidance
  • Vaccination gap review and catch-up vaccines as needed
  • Written pain action plan and parent education session

Chronic Transfusion Programme Initiation with Iron Chelation

Regular red cell transfusions every 3–4 weeks to suppress sickle haemoglobin, used primarily for children at high stroke risk or after a stroke, combined with iron-chelation therapy to manage iron build-up.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$500 – $1,000

Typical tests: CBC with differential and reticulocyte count, Extended red cell phenotyping (Rh, Kell, Kidd, Duffy antigens), Alloantibody screen and crossmatch, Serum ferritin, MRI liver T2* (liver iron concentration), Liver function tests and kidney function tests, Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, 2D Echocardiogram. Done in India before admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $4,000 – $8,000

Treatment Duration

Treatment duration in India: ~3 months (~9 hospital visit days across the full span)

Treatment Plan Each transfusion session is a day-admission (3–5 hours). The initial India visit covers full evaluation, baseline ferritin and liver iron assessment, first 2–3 transfusion sessions, and iron-chelation initiation. Subsequent sessions are coordinated locally or on return visits.

Usually Included in Treatment Package

  • Paediatric haematologist consultations (3–4 visits)
  • Extended red cell phenotyping and alloantibody screen
  • Baseline ferritin, liver iron (MRI T2* if indicated) and organ function panel
  • 2–3 matched red cell transfusion sessions (day admissions)
  • Iron-chelation therapy initiation with dose titration
  • Written transfusion and chelation protocol for local follow-up team

Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (Bone Marrow Transplant)

The only established cure for sickle cell disease — replacing the child's sickle-gene-carrying bone marrow with healthy stem cells from a matched donor, typically considered for children with severe disease and an available sibling or family donor.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $20,000 – $45,000

For more details, visit: Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant →

I came from Tanzania to arrange my wife's surgery, and choosing Ginger Health Care was one of the best decisions I made. From the very beginning until the end of our treatment, the entire team managed everything exceptionally well and exceeded my expectations. The team was professional, responsive, and genuinely caring throughout the entire journey. Before coming to India, I was very worried about how everything would be managed, but the Ginger Health Care team took care of every detail, making the whole process smooth and stress-free. A special thanks to Dolma Ma'am, Mohsin, iske jahan and Faizan for their dedication, support, and outstanding coordination. Their hard work, kindness, and commitment made us feel comfortable and well cared for at every step. I am truly grateful and deeply thankful to the entire Ginger Health Care team for everything they have done for us. I am very happy that I chose your team, and I sincerely appreciate all your efforts. Thank you once again to the whole team for your excellent service and support.

I can honestly say that my experience seeking treatment abroad was nothing short of exceptional, and it really highlighted just how disappointing my experience with the NHS had been in comparison. After facing long delays, lack of clear communication, and a general feeling of being overlooked in the UK system, making the decision to travel overseas for care felt like a last resort—but it turned out to be the best decision I could have made. From the moment we arrived, everything was handled with a level of professionalism and efficiency that immediately put me at ease. The hospital itself was spotless, modern, and incredibly well-organised. There was no sense of chaos or long waiting around; every appointment, test, and consultation was arranged promptly and ran exactly on time. It felt like the entire system was built around patient care and comfort, rather than patients having to fit into an overstretched system. The medical team were outstanding. Every doctor and nurse I interacted with took the time to listen carefully, explain things clearly, and make sure I fully understood my treatment plan. I never once felt rushed or dismissed. Instead, I felt genuinely cared for and respected, which made a huge difference during what was already a stressful time. One of the standout parts of the entire experience was the support we received from Natasha, our international client coordinator. From the very beginning, she went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. She organised appointments, helped with paperwork, arranged transport, and was always available whenever we had questions or concerns. Her communication was excellent, and she made what could have been a very overwhelming experience feel simple and manageable. Natasha didn’t just do her job—she genuinely cared. She checked in on us regularly, made sure we were comfortable, and provided reassurance every step of the way. Having someone like her there made a huge difference, especially being in a foreign country where things can easily feel unfamiliar or stressful. Overall, the level of care, attention, and efficiency we experienced abroad was on a completely different level. It’s frustrating to say, but the contrast with the NHS was stark. Where we had previously faced delays and uncertainty, we instead found clarity, speed, and genuine compassion. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone considering treatment abroad. The quality of care, combined with the incredible support from staff like Natasha, made what could have been a difficult experience into a very positive one. I’m truly grateful for the care I received and wouldn’t hesitate to make the same decision again if needed.
