Cost of Pediatric Fracture Surgery in India

Treatment overview

Pediatric fracture surgery is an operation to realign and stabilise a broken bone in a child or adolescent when a cast or splint alone will not produce a good result. It is recommended when a fracture is significantly displaced, involves a joint surface or growth plate, is unstable, or has broken through the skin. Depending on the bone affected and the child's age, the surgeon may use thin metal pins, plates, screws, flexible rods inserted inside the bone, or an external frame to hold the pieces in position while they heal. Children's bones heal faster than adult bones and have the ability to correct minor imperfections as they grow, so recovery is generally quicker — but special care is taken to protect the growth plates, which guide how bones lengthen over time. Most children return to school within a couple of weeks and to full activity within about three months.

4 approaches available for this treatment / procedure:

Closed Reduction and Percutaneous Pinning (CRPP) Minimally Invasive

The surgeon realigns the bone through the skin without a large incision, then passes thin metal pins through the skin to hold it in place — a cast is applied on top.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests for this variant: X-ray of the affected bone (AP and lateral views), CBC and coagulation profile (PT/INR), Blood group and crossmatch, Serum electrolytes, kidney function tests, Random blood glucose, Pediatric anesthesia fitness assessment. Done in India before hospital admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $4,000 – $6,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~1 days

Hospitalisation: ~4 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~5 days recommended

Total stay: approx 10 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • Pediatric orthopedic surgeon and anesthesiologist fees
  • Closed reduction and percutaneous K-wire pinning under fluoroscopy
  • Cast application post-procedure
  • Post-operative X-ray to confirm alignment
  • Pin-site care instructions for parents
  • Follow-up consultation for pin removal (typically 3-6 weeks post-op)

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) Open Surgery

The surgeon makes an incision to directly expose and reposition the fracture, then holds the bone firmly in place with metal plates, screws, or wires.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests for this variant: X-ray of the affected bone (AP and lateral views), CT scan of fracture site (for intra-articular or complex patterns), CBC and coagulation profile (PT/INR), Blood group and crossmatch, Serum electrolytes, kidney function tests, Random blood glucose, Pediatric anesthesia fitness assessment. Done in India before hospital admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $5,500 – $8,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~1 days

Hospitalisation: ~6 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~7 days recommended

Total stay: approx 14 days

Usually Included in Hospital Package

  • Pediatric orthopedic surgeon and anesthesiologist fees
  • Open reduction with direct fracture visualisation
  • Standard plate, screw, or wire internal fixation
  • Operation theatre charges including fluoroscopy
  • Post-operative X-rays and wound care during hospital stay
  • Post-operative medications and pain management
  • Follow-up consultation and wound check before departure

Flexible Intramedullary Nailing (FIMN) Intramedullary

Flexible metal rods are passed through the inside of the bone from small incisions near each end, acting as internal splints — widely used for femur and long-bone fractures in school-aged children.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests for this variant: X-ray of the affected bone (AP and lateral views), CBC and coagulation profile (PT/INR), Blood group and crossmatch, Serum electrolytes, kidney function tests, Random blood glucose, Pediatric anesthesia fitness assessment. Done in India before hospital admission.

Treatment / Procedure estimate

Estimated cost in India: $6,000 – $9,000

Stay in India

Pre-procedure stay (outside hospital): ~1 days

Hospitalisation: ~6 days

Recovery period (outside hospital): ~7 days recommended

  • Post-operative X-rays and wound care during hospital stay
  • Post-operative mobilisation guidance and physiotherapy initiation
  • Post-operative medications and pain management
  • Follow-up consultation before departure

External Fixation External Frame

Pins are placed into the bone above and below the fracture and connected to a frame outside the limb — used for severe open fractures or when the soft tissues are too damaged for internal hardware.

Comprehensive Investigations

Estimated cost: ~$300 – $500

Typical tests for this variant: X-ray of the affected bone (AP and lateral views), CT scan of fracture and surrounding soft tissue (if high-energy trauma), CBC and coagulation profile (PT/INR), Blood group and crossmatch, Serum electrolytes, kidney function tests, Random blood glucose, Wound culture and sensitivity (if open fracture with contamination), Pediatric anesthesia fitness assessment. Done in India before hospital admission.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the care and support we received. I especially want to give these 5 stars to our coordinator, Natasha, who was assigned to us during our stay, as well as to the entire backend team: Mr. Abdul Alim, Riashree, Faizan, Moshin, and everyone else. Their professionalism and dedication were evident. Thank you, and until next time!
