A pediatric liver transplant is a major operation in which a child's diseased or failing liver is surgically replaced with a healthy liver — either a whole organ from a deceased donor or a portion donated by a living adult relative. It is the definitive treatment for conditions such as biliary atresia, acute liver failure, inherited metabolic disorders, and end-stage cirrhosis in children, when no other therapy can keep the child well. In India, living donor liver transplantation is the most common approach for children, as a parent or close relative donates a portion of their liver, which then regenerates in both the child and the donor over weeks to months. The surgery itself takes between six and twelve hours and is followed by a stay in the paediatric intensive care unit before transfer to the ward. With experienced surgical and intensive care teams, most children recover well and go on to lead full, active lives.
